The Swedish manufacturer of premium cars Volvo introduced the new compact crossover Volvo XC40 2019-2020. The long-awaited presentation of the novelty took place on September 21 at an event in the European fashion capital – Milan. The new model, designed to strengthen the brand’s position in the small SUV segment, is seen as a replacement for the V40 Cross Country hatchback, but the latter will remain in service and will not be withdrawn from the market. The appearance in the line of mini crossovers of the classic Volvo all-terrain car should complicate life as much as possible with the undivided power of the BMW X1 , Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA . Running a bit ahead, we will say that the Swedish novelty possesses excellent initial data for entering the number of segment leaders. Especially, before the eyes there is a good example in the face of the elder brother of the XC60 , which is a real bestseller in the European market (82,990 copies sold in 2019 and 1 place in its class).
The launch of the production of the new Volvo XC40 2019-2020 is scheduled for November 2019, the cars will be removed from the plant’s conveyor in Belgian Ghent. Prices for the model in Europe have already been announced: a 190-horsepower diesel engine (version of Volvo XC40 D4) costs 44,450 euros, with a 247-horsepower petrol engine (Volvo XC40 T5) – from 45,750 euros. Both of these modifications will be announced in Russia in the spring of 2019. The smallest crossover in the Volvo range is built on the latest Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform, developed in partnership with Geely and providing a transverse arrangement of the power unit. The length of the car was 4425 mm, width – 1863 mm (with mirrors – 2034 mm), height – 1652 mm. The wheelbase XC40 stretched 2702 mm (BMW X1 – 2,670 mm, Audi Ku 3 26053 mm, Mercedes GLA 2,699 mm), the ground clearance is 211 mm. In running order, the diesel version of the D4 AWD weighs 1733 kg, the petrol version of the T5 AWD – 1684 kg.

The appearance of the new 40-series SUV is almost the same as in the 40.1 concept shown a year ago. Differences are hidden only in small details, such as mirrors, door handles, grille falshradiatora. In 2019, there will be a front-wheel drive version of the SUV with a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo unit of 156 hp, working together with a 6-speed manual transmission. Further, the hybrid is planned to be launched on the basis of the same “triplet” of 1.5 liters, and then completely electric version.
The suspension of the crossover is built according to the classical scheme with the front pillars of McPherson and the rear independent multi-lever. For a surcharge, you can order a sports chassis and adaptive shock absorbers with an adjustable degree of damping. The full drive is implemented with the use of a multi-plate clutch, which is responsible for the connection of the rear axle.
