Toyota Tundra 2019 – a small upgrade of the pickup truck

In the US market, sales of the updated Toyota Tundra pickup of the 2019-2020 model year started. The novelty was presented to the public in February this year at the Chicago Motor Show, and in September the serial version of the car became available for order. Cardinal changes in the exterior or in the technology of the third generation of the SUV are not expected to happen, and all the transformations are local. The developers endowed the Toyota Tundra 2019-2020 with a slightly tapered front end, an additional TRD Sport styling package and the advanced safety system Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P). In the United States, a restyling pickup, wholly and entirely created by the local Toyota unit, is offered in five versions at a price ranging from $ 32,720 to $ 50,130.

Before we proceed to a detailed review of the model in the new body, we give some statistical information. In the American market Toyota Tundra since the debut in 1999 is one of the main players in the class of off-road vehicles with an open cargo platform. So, in 2019, the sales volume of the Japanese pickup amounted to 115 489 units, for the first half of 2019, 53,652 cars were sold. Despite such outstanding figures, the Tundra is only on the fifth place in the segment – ahead still the quartet of pure-blooded “Americans”, namely the Ford F-series (820,799 cars sold in 2019), Chevrolet Silverado (574,876 units) , Dodge Ram (451,116 pcs.) And GMC Sierra (221,680 pcs.)

The assembly of full-size Tundra pickups is carried out only at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing plant in San Antonio, Texas. Separate components are manufactured at enterprises in Alabama (V8 engines) and North Carolina (automatic box for the 5.7-liter “eight”).

Features of the 2019-2020 model year

An updated SUV is available in several configurations that provide for:

  • Rear or all wheel drive;
  • Two wheelbase sizes;

  • Mass of additional equipment packages – TRD Off-Road, TRD Sport, Convenience, TRD Sport Convenience, Limited Premium, SR5 Upgrade, Tow Package.

Body dimensions and nuances of exterior design

The length of the body for these two formats is 5814 and 6294 mm, respectively. The width of the machine in any modification is 2030 mm, the height varies in the range of 1925-1940 mm. The ground clearance depends on the version: the minimum indicator is 254 mm, the maximum – 269 mm.

A pickup with a short base has a cargo platform with internal dimensions of 1694х1687 mm, with a long base – 2479х1687 mm. The specified width is the distance between the sides, if a measurement is made between the wheel arches, in this case only 1270 mm will leave. The height of the sides is 564 mm.

The design of the nose of the new Toyota Tundra may differ depending on the version. The initial SR and SR5 versions sport a gray radiator grille with cellular honeycomb structure and halogen optics (the SR5 package includes fog lamps). A similar falshradiator, but only black, is installed on machines in the top-end configuration of Platinum. The headlights here are, of course, completely LED. As for the cars in Limited and 1794 Edition variants, they are easily recognizable by a solid radiator grille with powerful horizontal slats and a rich chrome finish.

Body of Toyota Tundra Limited

The 2019 model is equipped with wheels of two dimensions – 18 and 20 inches. For smaller diameter discs, rubber is mounted 275/65 R18, for larger – 275/55 R20. The palette of the body enamels of the new Tundra pleases with an abundance of color shades, including Magnetic Gray, Super White, Midnight Black, Black, Sunset Bronze Mica, Silver Sky, Blazing Blue Pearl, Inferno, Quicksand, Cement and Barcelona Red.

Cabin configuration and equipment

The Japanese pickup after the upgrade is sold exclusively in four-door performance, though the size and, accordingly, the comfort level of the CrewMax and Double Cab booths is seriously different. The long cab CrewMax has larger rear doors, providing access to a much more spacious rear row of seats. The stock in the foot area here is 1074 mm, while Double Cab has only 881 mm. In both types of cab, the seats of the second row are able to fold, resulting in the formation of additional space to accommodate the load.

Interior of the novelty

If behind the rear three people can easily accommodate, then in front there are two options for arranging seats – for two (standard chairs) or three (sofa) riders. As a result, the Toyota Tundra is designed for a maximum of six passengers.

Specifications of Toyota Tundra in the body of 2019-2020 year

Buyers will be able to choose between two power units of the i-Force line:

  • 4.6-liter V8 (310 hp, 443 Nm);
  • 5.7-liter V8 (381 hp, 544 Nm).

Both “eight” are aggregated with a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

The front suspension of the Toyota Tundra is made in an independent design with double levers and anti-roll bar. At the rear, trapezoidal multi-leaf springs are added, supplemented with shock absorbers to improve damping efficiency. Brakes of all four wheels are ventilated disc: front – four-piston, rear – single-piston.

The full drive of the pickup truck is realized by the scheme part-time, which provides for a rigid connection of the front axle (there is no interaxle differential). The 4WDemand control system allows the selector to switch between three modes: 2WD, 4WD hi and 4WD low. The Auto LSD function controls the rotation of the rear wheels when slippage occurs, thereby ensuring traction to the wheel with the best grip.

Thanks to the frame structure and the powerful coupling device, the Toyota Tundra is capable of towing a trailer weighing up to 4600 kg. The maximum carrying capacity of the car, depending on the modification, ranges from 650 to 780 kg.
