The new Volkswagen Touareg 3 generation crossover is officially presented on March 23, 2020 as part of a special event in China. The new generation of the German crossover Volkswagen Tuareg 2019-2020, having moved to the MLB Evo platform, dropped more than 100 kg due to the wide use of aluminum. And it is completed now not only with six and eight cylinder engines, but also a gasoline four-cylinder turbo engine, which is part of the hybrid power plant. The production of the new Tuareg has already started at the Volkswagen AG plant in Slovakia, where, incidentally, two previous generations of the crossover were produced. The start of sales of the 3rd generation Touareg is scheduled for early summer 2020 at a price of 53,000 euros in Europe and from 3.4-3.5 million rubles in Russia. The main markets for the new Volkswagen Touareg will be China, Russia, Europe and the Middle East, but in America the “third” Tuareg does not appear. American motorists will have to be satisfied with the full-size 7-seat crossover Volkswagen Atlas and its 5-seat version, which is about to be revealed publicly at an auto show in New York.
Having replaced the generation of the popular German crossover Volkswagen Tuareg demonstrates the harmonious proportions of the body familiar to owners of the 2nd generation of the model with strict and concise lines. The design of the exterior of the body of the novelty for a good tradition for the Volkswagen brand has only evolved, becoming even more attractive and modern. However, in the image of the “third” Tuareg, it is easy to trace the connection with the concept of the Volkswagen T-Prime GTE, shown in the spring of 2016 in Beijing.
However, it is worth noting that the new Touareg has significantly increased in size compared to its predecessor, adding a length of 77 mm, becoming wider by 44 and getting larger … 1 mm, the size of the wheelbase, but the height of the body decreased by 7 mm. In this case, despite the large body dimensions, the new Tuareg even lost weight compared to the crossover of the 2nd generation, by 100-odd kilograms thanks to an increase in the proportion of aluminum in the car body structure to 48%. The remaining 52% is a combination of high and extra high strength steel.
- The exterior dimensions of the body of the Volkswagen Touareg 3 generation 2019-2020 are 4878 mm in length, 1984 mm (2193 mm including the rear view mirrors) in width, 1702 mm in height, with a 2894 mm wheelbase and 220 mm clearance (standard spring suspension) or 300 mm clearance with pneumatic racks (maximum value).
- The track of the front wheels is 1669 mm, the track of the rear wheels is 1685 mm.
- The length of the front overhang is 966 mm, the length of the rear overhang is 1018 mm.

The shortened version of the MLB Evo, based on the new generation of the crossover, brings together the new Touareg, of course, with the Porsche Cayenne 3 generations ( New Audi Q7 , Bentley Bentayga and Lamborghini Urus are based on an extended version of this “trolley”). The main features of the new platform are the longitudinal layout of the engine in the front overhang, the completely independent suspension architecture (in front of the two lever scheme, and at the rear a lot of levers), the use of both springs and pneumatic racks, and a “simple” four-wheel drive system with a multi-plate clutch distribution of engine thrust to the front and rear wheels. For the 3rd Generation Volkswagen Tuareg, the transmission with a mechanical center differential is not available, now there is no “lowering” or locking the rear differential. So goodbye offroad-version of Touareg, but the new generation of crossover will still be able to storm a 60-percent rise, to tow a trailer full weight to 3,500 kg.
However, there is no need to speak about the complete absence of off-road qualities in a novelty, especially if the manufacturer offers an Off-Road package as an option, which implies the presence of additional modes of movement in rough terrain (Off-Road Auto, Sand, Gravel and Off-Road Expert ), increased to 90 liters of fuel tank (standard is designed for 75 liters) and reinforced body protection from the bottom.
Fascinated by the technology of German novelties, they completely forgot about the stylish exterior of the crossover. A new Tuareg looks really cool and completely original. The designers succeeded not only in the front part of the body with a chic falshradiator grille, emphasizing the strict lines of super modern matrix LED headlamps IQ.Light (in each headlight with 128 controlled diode), but also the side surfaces of the body with a powerful relief of the surfaces of the wings and doors, as well as feed, awarded bright plafonds of parking lights with LED filling and dynamic control.
As mentioned in our review, the exterior design of the Volkswagen Touareg 3 generation is an evolution of the exterior of its predecessors. But the novelty salon demonstrates a real, high-quality and innovative leap forward. Just to see all the innovations come only from owners of rich crossover sets, for which Innovision Cockpit with a virtual 12-inch instrument panel is offered, a huge 15-inch touchscreen (multimedia with MirrorLink interfaces, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and climate control) on the center console oriented towards the driver and a lot of equipment.
There is also a projection display, a night vision camera, four zone climate control with a convenient control unit for the rear passengers, front multi-contour chairs (electric drive, heating, ventilation, massage with 8 modes), a Wi-Fi router that connects 8 gadgets, panoramic roof 1270 mm long and 825 mm wide, LED interior lighting with a choice of 30 glow options, artificial and natural leather, veneer panels of precious wood, polished aluminum and chrome.
Such abundance in the basic version of the new Volkswagen Touareg should not wait. In the presence of an ordinary instrument panel, a multimedia system with a modest color screen, two zone climate control, the finishing of seats with a cloth … in a word, democratic, but, of course, not cheap.
In all versions of the new crossover, the rear seats move along the interior by 160 mm, and the split backs change the angle of inclination to a maximum value of 21 degrees. The useful volume of the luggage compartment, even in the presence of passengers in the second row is from 687 to 810 liters, depending on the arrangement of the rear seats (shifted back to the stop or maximally shifted forward). When folding the back row, the boot volume increases more than twice, but, alas, no flat floor is formed, and the loading height of the floor is an impressive 808 mm.

For the “third” Tuareg, the manufacturer offers gasoline and diesel engines, as well as a hybrid version of the crossover.
The Volkswagen Touareg plug-in hybrid is equipped with a hybrid 367-horsepower unit as part of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with a payload of 249 horsepower and an electric motor.
The gasoline engine for the 3rd generation Volkswagen Touareg is claimed to be one, it’s a six cylinder 3.0 TSI (340 HP 450 Nm).
