New Kia Rio 2019 – the “fourth” Rio already

Kia Company announced the date of the sale of the 4th generation Kia Rio sedan for the Russian market. The new model 2019-2020 will appear in the salons of official dealers of the brand in August. Exact prices and bundled novelties will be published in the near future, but already now the base price tag is seen in the area of ​​650 thousand rubles, ie, approximately at the level of the predecessor . A close relative of Hyundai Solaris 2019 after modernization will please potential buyers with a new design of the body and interior, a more spacious interior, rich equipment and retuned suspension. The assembly of four-doors is set up at the plant near St. Petersburg, and the first production cars have already started to go off the assembly line. Increased interest in the updated Rio is due to its incredible popularity in Russia. For the first five months of 2019, 38,126 models were sold, and this is a sure first place in the list of the best-selling cars. Behind remained two “vazovsky” offspring – Granta and Vesta (33 444 and 27 986 pieces respectively). The excellent sales figures of the previous version of the sedan create a good platform for a sure start of the Kia Rio 4th generation.

The updated four-door Kia has grown in dimensions almost in all dimensions. First of all, we note the increase in wheelbase, which increased from 2570 to 2600 mm (+30 mm). Addition in the length of the body was 23 mm (new indicator – 4400 mm), in width – 40 mm (1740 mm). The height (1470 mm) and ground clearance (160 mm) remained unchanged.

The appearance of the Russian Kia Rio 4 almost one in one repeats the design of the Chinese analogue – Kia K2. The model for the Celestial market debuted at the end of 2019 at an automobile exhibition in Guangzhou. If you compare the new sedan with yourself a pre-reform sample, then the differences are just a lot. A modifying grille appeared on the front, representing a more compact and heavily narrowed version of the former “tiger nose”. The headlights are seriously added in size and very far “climbed” on the front fenders, from some angles, it may even seem too far away. But the front bumper was renewed clearly with a plus sign – it became more expressive at the expense of a solid central air intake and two side sections-boomerangs, into which the strokes of LED DRLs and miniature round fog-lamps fit harmoniously.

Forage attracts, first of all, a new design of the lanterns, visually combined into one unit with a jumper. Graphic drawing of optics differs by picturesque strokes of light-emitting diode elements. The rear bumper is decorated in the same style with the front bumper – on the sides are the same boomerangs with fog lights, in the center is formed a platform for the license plate.

The change in external dimensions and wheelbase affected the proportions of the sedan. Sideways the car now looks a little more interesting, especially when the wheel arches are 16-inch cast. Not looking worse than 15-inch steel wheels, included in the initial configuration.

The interior of the new Kia Rio meets the European-style strict design of the front panel, solid materials of finishing, comfortable seats and a perfectly organized work area for the driver. The combination of instruments is pleased by the concise presentation of on-board data and the pleasant digitization of scales. To the flaws of the internal layout of the cabin is to include a too low position of the multimedia screen on the console (in the European hatchback Kia Rio the display is mounted higher, between the deflectors) and the unfortunate location of the heated seat buttons aligned just in front of the gearshift lever. The very handle of the box control, especially when it comes to the “automatic”, has the optimal form, guaranteeing a comfortable grip.

Improved interior

The standard equipment of the model, as before, will not be so saturated: it is an electric drive and heated side mirrors, power windows, a height-adjustable steering column, an on-board computer, ABS, a stabilization system, tire pressure monitoring, two airbags, ERA-GLONASS.

More expensive versions of the sedan rely on headlamps with lens optics and cornering lights, a multimedia system with a 7-inch display (Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, navigation), a rear-view camera, climate control, heated windshield and rudder, heated seats (including number, rear), engine start button, interior trimmed with artificial leather, up to 6 airbags.

The second row of seats Kia Rio will offer the passenger, albeit slightly, but still more spacious conditions for accommodation. In the leg area, an additional 24 mm of free space appeared, in the shoulder zone it became 18 mm wider, the reserve overhead increased by 4 mm. But the volume of the luggage compartment has decreased – instead of the previous 500 liters, you can now only load 480 liters. The reason lies in the revised rear suspension scheme. The reduction in tonnage had little effect on the configuration of the cargo hold – the shape is practically the same, the underground is used to accommodate a full-size spare. The trunk lid is opened from the passenger compartment or in a non-contact way (top-end equipment).

Technical characteristics of Kia Rio in the body of 2019-2020

The “Fourth” Kia Rio in Russia is equipped with two power units:

  • The 1.4 Kappa MPI engine with 100 hp. (132 Nm), or
  • The 1.6 Gamma MPI engine with a maximum draft of 123 hp. (151 Nm).

Both “atmospherics” are equipped with phase shifters at the inlet and outlet valves. Available variants of transmissions – 6MKPP and 6-step “automatic”. The capacity of the fuel tank was increased to 50 liters (earlier was 43 liters).

The developers tried to slightly change the character of Kia Rio, adjusting its running gear for a more active ride. To this end, the geometry of the front suspension has been modified (the angles of wheel alignment have been revised), the rear scheme has been corrected (the dampers now stand more vertically), the hydraulic booster has been replaced by an electric booster. The car has become a bit stiffer, but the feedback has improved. The automatic box has undergone an upgrade, which has learned much more adequately, without failures and jerks, to react to sharp manipulations of the accelerator pedal.
