New BMW i3 2019 – planned updating of the electric car


On the eve of the launch of the Frankfurt Motor Show, BMW Company presented an updated version of the compact electric vehicle BMW i3 2019-2020. The model has experienced the first major upgrade since its launch in late 2013. True, some refinements were already made in 2019 – then the hatchback got a new battery with a capacity of 33 kWh (before that the battery was 22 kWh). The current update was accompanied by much larger transformations, for example, revision of external design and improvement of instrumentation. But the main result of the upgrade was the appearance of the sporty modification of the BMW i3s, which differs in a different configuration of bumpers, larger wheel rims, a modified chassis and an electric motor of increased productivity. “Heated” option will go on sale along with the usual version in November 2019 at a price of 45,750 euros. The base cost of the classic hatchback in Germany will be 37 550 euros.

In the countries of the Old World, the BMW i3 electric car enjoys a very stable demand, especially with an eye on the unmerciful price tag. And the sales curve after the release of the model on the market is steadily creeping up: in 2019 it was sold 9048 units, in 2019 – 11851 units, in 2019 – 14999 units. The main competitors in the face of Renault Zoe and Nissan Leaf, if not pulled away, it is not too strong, dispersed in 2019, with a circulation of 21,240 and 18,210 copies, respectively. But they do not pretend to a premium status and have an order of magnitude more modest price list (Nissan costs about 23 thousand euros, Renault – 22 thousand euros). So the prospects for further growth for BMW i3 in 2019-2020 are very good, so it makes sense to study in more detail photo, equipment and prices, technical characteristics of the German novelty.

The design of the body of the BMW i3 and BMW i3s

Despite its modest dimensions, the Bavarian electric vehicle, even before restyling, was distinguished by a dynamic exterior appearance, supplemented by a mass of unusual design “chips”. After a planned update, the hatchback began to look even brighter and more exciting, especially in the sports version of the BMW i3s. But we’ll talk about it a little later, at first we’ll touch on the metamorphosis that happened with the exterior of the usual “ai-third”.

First of all, let’s pay attention to an easy change in the scheme of the two-color body color – if before the contrasting black color painted hood, roof and tailgate, now this shade has got the roof racks and arches over the side doors. In addition, the front and rear bumpers received a different design, and more silver elements appeared on the body of the car. Such accents are placed, for example, in the lower part of the sidewalls and on the boot lid, and the upper contours of the side glazing are also outlined by light strips extending to the stern.

The optics of the new BMW III now have a fully-fledged LED version by default. This applies to the rear lights, and the front headlights, and even horizontal strokes of direction indicators. The palette of the body enamels of the model was expanded due to two new colors, which included six colors in the assortment: Capparis White, Fluid Black, Melbourne Red metallic, Imperial Blue metallic, Protonic Blue metallic, Mineral Gray metallic.

The “sporty” variation of the BMW i3s differs from the standard with more powerful bumpers with original decorative inserts and overlays, wheel arch extensions and exclusive 20-inch alloy wheels. A characteristic feature of the S-version is the ubiquitous application in the external finish of black gloss.

Interior and equipment

Unlike the exterior of the Bavarian electric car has received not so many updates. The main innovation was the improved multimedia system iDrive with 10.25-inch screen, improved menu, optimized voice recognition function, the Professional navigation system, a new application package and the Apple CarPlay interface (optional). The rest is unchanged – the previous 4-seater cabin configuration, finishing with the predominant use of recycled materials and renewable raw materials, doors opening towards each other, a familiar list of complete sets (Atelier, Loft, Lodge and Suite).

German engineers provided the novelty with a wide range of electronic assistants. These include a parking assistant (controls acceleration, braking, gear selection and steering wheel rotation), a rear view camera, a front-end collision warning with pedestrian recognition, adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go function, a traffic jam autopilot Traffic Jam (operates at speeds up to 60 km / h).

Technical specifications of BMW i3 2019-2020 year

The classic version of the BMW ai-3 is driven by an electric motor with a power output of 170 hp. (250 Nm), transmitting traction with a single-stage box on the rear axle. Acceleration to 100 km / h in the car takes 7.3 seconds, the speed limit is set at 150 km / h. The electric car is equipped with a traction lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 33 kWh, which at full charge provides a power reserve in the standard NEDC cycle – 290 km, in the WLTP cycle – 235 km, in real conditions – about 180 km.

The sporty modification of the BMW i3s was ordered by a modified electric motor of the usual i3. Thanks to a different control program and new bearings, its output was increased to 184 hp. and 270 Nm. Increase in productivity in 14 hp and 20 Nm allowed the hatchback to slightly improve the dynamic characteristics. Acceleration to “hundreds” of the version with index S does not exceed 6.9 seconds, and the maximum speed of the car is limited to 160 km / h. The battery in the “charged” version has the same capacity of 33 kWh, which means about the same real power reserve of 180 km. Charging the battery to 80% when connected to a device BMW i Wallbox takes 2 hours 45 minutes, when connected to a home network – about 11 hours.

In addition to a powerful electric motor, the i3s version has an underestimated 10 mm sports chassis with original springs, shock absorbers and anti-roll bars. A more tightly knit and stiffer suspension adds stability to the car at high speeds and with steep turns. Implement the driver’s potential is fully assisted by the Sport mode, which can be selected using the Driving Experience Control selector.

Both versions of the BMW i3 are optionally equipped with a two-cylinder gasoline engine with a capacity of 0.65 liters (38 hp). It does not transmit traction to the wheels, but operates exclusively in the generator mode, recharging the battery. With the petrol engine running, equipped with a 9-liter tank, the actual hatchback stroke is 330 km, which is 150 km more than the modification without a generator. On the other hand, with an inactive DIC, the car can overcome only 220-235 km in the NEDC cycle – the accelerated energy consumption is due to an additional 120 kg, which makes up the weight of the on-board generator with all the associated equipment.
